Why choose Optimum Nutrition Serious Mass
Serious Mass by Optimum Nutrition is a high-calorie weight gainer made for anyone trying to build muscle and add body weight. Every two-scoop serve packs about 1,250 calories, with 50 g of blended protein and 252 to 254 g of carbs to support muscle recovery and refill your glycogen stores. Each serve also includes 3 g of creatine monohydrate to help boost strength and power in high-intensity training.

Serious Mass comes in a range of sizes and flavours, so the shake is an easy fit for people with fast metabolisms, small appetites or busy days that make getting enough calories from food alone a real challenge.

Ingredients
Maltodextrin, protein blend (whey protein concentrate, calcium caseinate, sweet dairy whey), emulsifier (soy lecithin), flavours, creatine monohydrate, medium chain triglycerides, vitamin and mineral blend, L-glutamine, acidity regulator (330), sweeteners (sucralose, acesulfame potassium) and colour (100). How many calories do you need to gain weight?
To gain weight, you need to eat more calories than you burn each day. Most people aim for a few hundred extra calories a day. A full serve of Serious Mass adds about 1,250 calories, so many people start with a half serve (1 scoop, about 625 calories) and build up. Track your weight each week and adjust.
How to take Serious Mass
Blend 2 scoops into 700 to 720 ml of cold water or milk with an electric blender. Using a blender lets you add fruit, peanut butter and other foods for even more calories. New users should start with a half serve of 1 scoop. Have your shake after training and/or between meals to add calories, carbs and protein to a healthy, balanced diet.
Flavours and mixing
Banana, Chocolate and Vanilla in both sizes, plus Strawberry in the 5.44 kg tub. Serious Mass is a big serve, so a blender works best. Milk gives a thicker, creamier shake. Not sure which flavour to pick? Serious Mass is covered by our Love the Taste Guarantee. Try up to 5 serves within 30 days. If you don't love the flavour, swap for another or take store credit.
Sizes and price per serve
- 2.72 kg (8 serves): $99.95, about $12.49 a full serve.
- 5.44 kg (16 serves): $169.95, about $10.62 a full serve.
Who should take Serious Mass?
Serious Mass is a good fit for hard gainers who struggle to put on weight, people with fast metabolisms or small appetites, and anyone too busy to eat enough meals. Serious Mass is not for people trying to lose weight, people on low-carb diets, anyone under 15, or pregnant or nursing women.
Things to know before you buy
Serious Mass is very high in carbs, mostly from maltodextrin, and a full serve has more calories than most meals. Too many extra calories can add body fat as well as muscle, so pair Serious Mass with regular strength training and real food, and adjust your serve size as you go. People with diabetes or kidney problems should talk to their doctor first.
What to take with Serious Mass
- Creatine: Serious Mass already has 3 g of creatine per serve, so you may not need extra. For a half serve, you can top up with Optimum Nutrition Micronized Creatine.
- A protein snack: the EQ Food XL1000 Cal Protein Cookie adds about 1,000 calories on the go.
- Pre-workout: Faction Labs Disorder before training.
Serious Mass vs other mass gainers
- Optimum Nutrition Serious Mass: about 1,250 calories and 50 g of protein per serve, with 3 g of creatine.
